Baseball: English rides long ball to victory over Peabody

Last season in two games against Peabody, the Lynn English baseball team was outscored to the tune of 25-0 and managed a total of five hits against the Tanners.On Friday at Bezemes Field in Peabody, the Bulldogs needed only one batter to change that tone this season.Esteban Paula led off the game with a solo homer and the Bulldogs never looked back as Mike Gonzalez pitched a complete game, needing only 69 pitches to shut down Peabody, 7-3, and improve the Bulldogs to 4-0.”We played solid defense, protected the baseball and got a couple of timely hits,” English coach Joe Caponigro said.Paula’s solo shot was part of a three run first that put English in front early. The Tanners (4-3) bounced back with a run in its half of the first before the Bulldogs went back to the long ball in the fourth when Danny Vincente cranked a solo homer.Peabody responded with two runs in the bottom of the fourth to make it 4-3. But English found the long ball again when Richie Arias hit the Bulldogs third homer of the game in the fifth. Two more runs would score on doubles by Jonathan Surette and Brian Maynard in the seventh.”They were ready,” Peabody coach Mark Bettencourt said about English’s effort. They came with a chip on their shoulder and played very well.”Tech 10, Chelsea 2At Fraser Field, Mikey Lara had a spectacular day at the plate for the Tigers (3-3) going 5-for-5 with three triples, two doubles and six RBI.”That’s a crazy day,” Tech coach Yuri Sanchez said.Anthony Grillo was 4-for-4 with three runs scored from the lead off spot and Ronny Guzman had a pair of doubles and an RBI. Francisco Tolentino struck out 10 and scattered four hits on the mound.Salem 3, Classical 2At Salem, the Rams (1-3) had a chance to tie the game in the seventh with runners on second and third but Salem’s T.J. Larivee got Eddie Terrero on a sharp grounder to first for the final out.Greg Rybak provided all the Classical offense with a 2-run homer in the third. Mike Gallo and Ellido Reyes each had two hits in the loss.Saugus 5, Swampscott 3At World Series Park, Saugus (2-4) had five players out with a stomach virus but Cam Maguire helped pick up the slack on the mound for the Sachems. Maguire went the distance, allowing three hits and all three runs on a homer by Hunter Gordon.Maguire also was 2-for-3 with an RBI at the plate. Paul Andrews was 2-for-3 with two RBI and Joey Meuse had a sacrifice fly for an RBI.Shane Coffey, Steve Moran and Matt Barbuzzi also had hits for Swampscott, who fell to 2-2.Danvers 11, Winthrop 2At Twi Field in Danvers, the Falcons (1-3) finally broke through as five different players drove in runs, led by Tom Marini’s 4-for-4, three RBI effort. Kyle Larson was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a two run homer while Greg Ladd was 2-for-4 with two runs scored.Ladd got the win on the mound, going six innings, striking out four. Larson worked a perfect seventh for Danvers.SJP 15, Methuen 3At Methuen, the Eagles (5-1) bounced back from Wednesday’s loss to Xaverian with an offensive explosion on the road. Greg Donahue led the way, going 3-for-4 with four RBI whule Chris Carmain was 3-for-4 with three RBI.Garrett Folger went 3-for-4 with an RBI. Nick Fabrizio went the first five innings on the mound in recording his first varsity win.Beverly 13, Revere 5At Revere, Peter Kallas, Austin Butler and Ethan Trout belted back-to-back-to-back homers in the fifth inning as the Panthers (4-1) belted four long balls in all. Kallas hit two dingers in the game.Beverly had leads of 3-0 nad 6-1 before Revere cut the lead to 6-5 in the fifth. The Panthers responded with the three homers in a row that were part of a five run sixth inning.
