LYNN-The School Committee voted Thursday night to accept an historical donation to Lynn Classical High School from the Peabody Historical Society. The society has sent along several copies of the Lynn Classical Gazzette from 1905, which were recently discovered in the organization’s archives.Superintendent Catherine Latham, who is close friends with Andrew Metropolis, a member of the Peabody Historical Society and former colleague of Latham when both were teaching at Peabody Veterans Memorial High School, said that Metropolis recently found several issues of the school paper dated 1905 in the society’s archives, and donated the findings to the department.”I’ll say in 1905 kids could really write,” said Latham. “They are really something to see.”The donation was one of two accepted by the committee, who also voted to accept a donation of $1,000 to Classical High School in the name of the late Sidney T. Ross. The donation was made by the Ross family trust in the name of Sidney Ross following the death of Ross’ widow, Lillian, in January. The committee has set the last day of school this year for Wednesday, June 24, one week later than originally scheduled because of snow days and school cancellations. Also, the committee has once again voted not to take part in the state’s school choice program. The School Committee has voted to move its next meeting from its regularly scheduled date, Thursday, April 30, to Tuesday, April 28 to accommodate student government day in the city.High school students from each school will be participating in a variety of student government activities at City Hall throughout the day, including mock School Committee and City Council meetings. The new committee meeting will take place on the 28th at 6 p.m. in the Tiger’s Den cafeteria in the Lynn Vocational and Technical Institute Annex Building at 90 Commercial St.
