LYNN-The Department of Conservation and Recreation, which oversees the Nahant Beach Reservation, has purchased hundreds of native plants that will be used in the flower beds at the Nahant Rotary. The Friends of Lynn and Nahant Beach are coordinating a planting day, which has been scheduled for Saturday, April 25 rain or shine. Participants are asked to meet at the Ward Bathhouse at 9 a.m.According to Friends of Lynn and Nahant Beach President Bob Tucker, the group, which has approximately 170 members, approached the DCR regarding sprucing up the Nahant Rotary.?We have a very good relationship with the DCR and have formed a strong partnership with them,” he said. “We approached the DCR and told them we would like to beautify and spruce up the Rotary. There are four flower beds on the Rotary but they haven’t been maintained or spruced up. The DCR has someone on staff to oversee plantings and they visited the Rotary. The DCR took into consideration the conditions and climate then came up with a design and plants that would do well there. Obviously we can’t have plants that will grow too high or it would make it difficult for drivers to see going around the Rotary.”Tucker said plants for the four flower beds would cost approximately $4,000.?To our surprise the DCR found money to purchase the plants,” he said. “We’ll provide the labor. We’re hoping to get a lot of the members of the Friends of Lynn and Nahant Beach there and members of the general public to help out.”In addition to the planting, Tucker said the cannon in the Rotary would be repainted as well.?It’ll be a big improvement for that area,” he said. “It’s a win/win situation.”Tucker said materials and refreshments would be provided for volunteers.Tucker said he is optimistic that once the area is spruced up it would be well maintained.?The DCR has a landscaper maintaining Lynn Shore Drive and that landscaper will also maintain the Rotary,” he said.Tucker said upcoming Friends of Lynn and Nahant Beach events would include a beach cleanup in June. Anyone interested in joining the Friends of Lynn and Nahant beach should go online to www.lynn-nahantbeach.otg.
