LYNN – Once a haven for vandals, Weeks Field at the Clark Street Playground is now looking more attractive to patrons and much more safe than before, thanks to the efforts of volunteers from Lynn Vocational Technical Institute. With the help of coaches and Parks Commission members Larry Bowden and Bill Allen, 10 seniors from Art Badger’s metal fabrication shop spent the day Thursday welding hinges on equipment and mending fences to keep intruders out so that the park can remain a safe place for area children and young athletes to play.”Anything we can do to get those kids out and working in the community is good,” said Badger. “This park has had a lot of problems with vandalism. Maybe if they learn what it is like to go out there and do things like this they will be less likely to do it themselves.”The students worked throughout the day to repair the equipment and fences, stopping only briefly to fuel up on pizza – even if they did work a little bit slower with a full stomach.”Maybe I should have waited until the end to give them the pizza,” Badger quipped. “They didn’t want to work quite as much after they ate.”
