The Lynn English baseball team came into Saturday’s game at Cooney Field in Beverly having scored 75 runs in its first six games, an average of 12.5 runs per contest.Well, the Bulldogs didn’t do a lot to hurt that average on Saturday. But they also needed every run they got against the pesky Panthers.English found itself in an unfamiliar spot, having to rally after falling from behind early. Yet the Bulldogs were still able to reach double figures for the sixth time in seven games in taking a 10-6 win over the Panthers.”Hitting is contagious and everyone up and down the lineup is hitting right now,” English coach Joe Caponigro said.Jonathan Surette was the ringleader once again for English on Saturday, going 3-for-5 with three RBI and a critical homer during a five-run fourth inning for the Bulldogs. Leadoff batter Esteban Paula had three hits, two of them doubles, and three RBI with No. 9 batter Anthony Ortiz getting three hits, scoring three runs and driving in two.Brian Maynard staked English to a 1-0 lead in the second on his third homer of the season. Beverly (6-2) went in front in the bottom the second on a 2-run shot by Frankie Messina. It stayed that way until the fourth when Surette hit his homer to help give English a 6-2 lead. The Bulldogs added another run in the fifth before Beverly rallied with four runs, three coming on catcher Joe Wioncek’s triple, in the bottom of the sixth to cut the gap to one.English, though, had an answer again as Paula’s 2-run double and an RBI single from Surette finally allowed the Bulldogs to breathe easy.”They really can hit the ball,” Beverly coach Dave Wilbur said. “There isn’t an easy out in that lineup.”Mike Gonzales got the win on the mound, going the first 5 2/3 innings, striking out six and allowing five earned runs. Sam Hill came on and worked the final 1 1/3 innings, striking out four, to lock down the win.”This is a testament to the work the kids have put in,” Caponigro said. “We’ve only given up 24 runs in seven games, so we’re getting the pitching along with the hitting.”Wilmington 7, Lynnfield 0At Wilmington, the Pioneers (3-7) left seven men on base and could manage only four hits against the Wildcats. Nick Roberts; Dante Padovani; Sam Oliveri and Pete Franchi had the hits for Lynnfield.BOYS LACROSSEFenwick 7, Malden 4At Donaldson Field in Peabody, Mike Buonfiglio had a hat trick and Joe Flaherty added a pair of goals and an assist as Fenwick moved to 4-4 for the season.
