LYNN – Alonzo Guzman returns to District Court on May 29 after prosecutors charged him Monday with murder in the shaking death of his girfriend’s 2-month-old daughter.
Lizbeth Guzman died last Thursday and an autopsy, according to a police report, determined her head and optic nerve injuries indicated “there is probable cause to believe that Alonso Guzman caused these injuries which subsequently led to the death of Lisbeth Guzman.”
Guzman pleaded innocent to the murder charge and his next court appearance is a probable cause hearing.
Prosecutors last week said Guzman, 18, 30 Baker St. #2, admitted to shaking the girl on April 25. At his April 27 arraignment, Guzman pleaded innocent to assault and battery with serious injury on a child, a charge that was dismissed Monday following his murder arraignment.
Police reports indicate Guzman initially told officers he was changing the girl’s diaper and turned away from her to prepare a bottle for her feeding. When he turned back “she appeared to have trouble breathing.”
He told officers he tried rubbing her torso to stimulate breathing and sought help from a downstairs neighbor after about five minutes.
MGH Dr. Danielle Dwyer told police the child had sustained a head injury and investigators subsequently questioned Alonso who told them sometime during the previous week he was “holding the baby and she fell on her face.”
