SAUGUS – Police Chief Domenic DiMella was given an award Wednesday for something he does pretty much every day – supporting his officers.DiMella was recognized by the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) for supporting his officers who have left their job in Saugus when called up by the military to serve in Afghanistan or Iraq. With only 52 officers, including DiMella, ESRG representative Frank Reid estimated that nearly 20 percent of the department has been deployed at one point or another since the War on Terror began. The numbers seemed to surprise even him.”That’s impressive,” he said. “It is really appropriate that you get this award.”Reid said the basic mission of the ESGR is to raise awareness among employers of the need to support their workers who serve in the National Guard or the Reserves. He said the organization, which is funded by the Department of Defense, aims to make sure employers keep alive the employee’s benefits, planned raises and such while the employee is away.”We’re hoping they would go the extra mile for their members that serve,” he said.Reid said there is also an ombudsman organization to help returning guard and reserve personnel transfer back into civilian life and hopefully pick up their jobs where they left off.DiMella didn’t deny that having men shipping out periodically is a hardship.”Obviously it affects the overtime budget, but they’re fighting for our country so it’s well worth it,” he said.Last year, DiMella was presented the Patriotic Employer award after being nominated by patrolman Anthony Gaieski. Reid said this award, however, is the “Above and Beyond Award,” for outstanding service and continuing support to the national defense.Over the last few years, Gaieski along with colleagues Dave Belanger, James Scott, Gary Sacco, Tom Wilson, Paul Vansteensburg, Anthony LoPresti, Frank McKinnon and civilian dispatcher Jason Carmody have all traveled overseas to fight for the USA in one capacity or another.”It’s nice to have a little recognition,” Reid said. “I think everyone needs a little public support to recognize the work they do.”The Fire Department was given the same award last year for its support. Fire Chief James Blanchard had several firefighters dispatched overseas including one who was called up three times.DiMella said he appreciated the recognition and had to think carefully where he would hang his framed certificate.”I’m trying to think of the best spot where the most people will see it,” he said. “We will post it proudly.”
