LYNN – A 13-year-old student was arrested at Marshall Middle School Tuesday and booked on three charges, one of which is a felony, as a result of harassing a fellow student Monday night. Police arrested the 13-year-old student at 2 p.m. inside the school and charged him with assault with a deadly weapon (knife), unlawful possession of a knife in school and a violation of the city knife ordinance. He was taken into custody and should be arraigned in juvenile court Wednesday.Lynn Police spokesman Lt. William Sharpe said Tuesday that police were initially called to Marshall Monday afternoon after the 13-year-old student allegedly threatened an 11-year-old student while the two were walking on Union Street after school. At the time, the 11-year-old students’ parents filed a complaint with school administration, but the 13-year old was not arrested.Upon further investigation, police found that the 13-year-old had actually pulled out a knife and threatened the other student, which is a felony in Massachusetts.Police returned to Marshall Tuesday afternoon and arrested the student for Monday’s incident, and also found a small Swiss Army knife in his possession when they searched his backpack.School Attendance and Discipline Specialist Rick Iarrobino said Tuesday that there was no fight or attack in or out of the school, but the student may have made threats.”Nobody was hurt,” said Iarrobino. “There may have been a threat made, but that was about the extent of it.”School administrators are still deciding whether they will expel the student immediately, which is allowed because he was charged with a felony, or indefinitely suspend him until his court case is resolved. If they chose the latter, they will have to take the student back if he is not found guilty.
