NAHANT – The town is moving forward with constituting a new zoning committee. In April, Town Meeting authorized the formation of a new zoning committee, which would be made up of seven members. The committee will be made up of the building inspector, a member of the Planning Board, one member from the Zoning Board of Appeals and four residents appointed by the selectmen.Town Administrator Mark Cullinan is looking for four residents to serve on the committee, which is charged with reviewing the existing zoning bylaws and reporting back to the Town Meeting with any recommendations.Cullinan said ideally he would like to be able to appoint one resident from each of the following areas: Bass Point, Little Nahant, East Point and Central Nahant.”I think the neighborhoods geographically are distinctive in many ways,” he said. “I think it’s an opportunity to take a look at what makes each area unique and make sure our zoning bylaws are developed in a way that allows us to preserve that.”Cullinan said a review of the zoning bylaws is long overdue.”It has been over 15 years since the town has comprehensively reviewed the zoning bylaws,” he said. “During these years I have heard from many who have expressed concern and frustration with the existing bylaws. These individuals include the building inspector, who also serves as the zoning administrator, town counsel, members of the Planning Board and Zoning Board of Appeals, as well as many residents. It’s time to take another look at what works and what doesn’t.” Any resident interested in serving on the new committee should contact Cullinan at 781-581-9927.
