WORCESTER – The St. Mary’s girls athletic program has its second state title this year.The softball team defeated Monty Tech today, 8-5, in the Division 3 state final, coming from behind twice along the way, to capture the program’s first-ever championship. It is also the city’s first-ever state softball title.St. Mary’s overcame deficits of 3-2 and 5-3 today at Worcester State before scoring two runs in the fifth inning and one more in the seventh to take the lead for good.Sam Kiley came into pitch in the third inning, after the Bulldogs had gone ahead, 5-3, and shut them down the rest of the way, allowing only three hits.Offensively, Kristina Burri had a double and a triple to help lead a balanced Spartan attack.The Spartans’ girls hockey team won a state title this past winter. Five of the players from that team – Erin McAndrews, Angela Dandreo, Michelle Macchione, Genevieve Benoit and Sabrina Ianetti – also play on the softball team.St. Mary’s entered the tournament at 12-8, and was seeded 15th. Thie Spartans fought through a tough bracket before conquering Austin Prep, 6-2, to win the North title last Saturday.They came from behind in dramatic fashion Wednesday to overtake Cohasset, 4-3, to win the state semifinal.The title is the first as a head coach for coach Colleen Newbury.
