Non-profit college educational program moves to new Lynn home

LYNN – The College Application Education Project Inc., a non profit organization dedicated to helping students attend college with the help and support of educational after school programs, has moved to a new home at the Zion Baptist Church in Lynn.Formerly housed at the First United Methodist Church on Union Street, CAEP moved to the Zion Baptist Church at 4 Adams St. Ext. this month.Organized in 2004 by community activist Arthur Akers as a way to help students prepare and apply for college, the program has expanded into an all-purpose after school activity group where students can receive tutoring, support and participate in fun, unique activities.CAEP’s mission is to “set up an institutional mechanism and a community structure whereby parents and middle school and high school students of all cultures can receive direct college preparation.”But being a part of the organization is much more than getting help with homework and applying for school. From spelling bees to talent shows, members also participate in a variety of activities throughout the year that help keep middle and high school aged students away from the streets and some of the dangerous activity that takes place in local neighborhoods.Members take trips to visit colleges, such as Harvard University, and go on team-building excursions where they deep-sea fish and bowl, providing all of their academic obligations are met.The organization is open to any middle or high school student in the city, but the students must commit to the program and undergo an application process. For more information visit www.caeproject.org or call 781-595-1022.
