SWAMPSCOTT -After being passed over for numerous other positions in the last year, Town Administrator Andrew Maylor is in the process of negotiating a contract extension or new contract with the selectmen,.
Board of Selectmen Chairman Eric Walker confirmed negotiations are taking place with Maylor, who was hired as the first town administrator in Swampscott.?I can confirm we are in negotiations with him regarding a contract extension,” Walker said. “We have been in discussions for a few weeks but nothing is definite yet.”Maylor signed a 5-year contract when he was hired by the town and negotiated a 2-year extension in 2006, which commenced after the expiration of the first contract in 2007. Maylor started work Oct. 7, 2002 and his contract expires in approximately six months.Maylor has applied for numerous other positions during his tenure in Swampscott, with the most recent being a couple of weeks ago when he was one of four finalists for the town administrator position in Scituate, but he was passed over in favor of Patricia Vinchesi.Walker said the selectmen are happy with Maylor’s performance and hope he stays in town.?I’m very happy with his performance,” he said. “I think we agree he’s the right person for the job at this time.”Attempts to reach Maylor were unsuccessful but Walker, who said he was speaking only for himself and not for the rest of the board, said he believes Maylor is more comfortable with the idea of remaining in Swampscott than he has been in the past. When asked if the negotiations addressed any concerns about Maylor applying for other positions, Walker said the issue has been touched upon.?I don’t think it’s fair of us to tell him he can’t apply for other positions,” Walker said. “Personally I don’t want to restrict him but that’s just my opinion.”Selectman Jill Sullivan declined to comment and calls to other selectmen were not returned. In the last couple of years, Maylor has applied for town administrator and town manager positions in numerous communities and in most cases made the list of finalists but he has yet to be offered a position.Maylor was one of three finalists for the town manager position in Winthrop in late May but the Winthrop Council selected James McKenna, a trial attorney and two-term administrative assistant to former Gloucester Mayor John Bell, to serve as the next town manager there. In 2008, Maylor was passed over for the town administrator/administrator jobs in Billerica, Wakefield and Acton. In May 2008, he was not selected for a city manager position in Oviedo, Fla., where he was one of 14 semifinalists.
