NAHANT – Despite the dismal economy and weather, the annual fireworks show in Nahant will go on.Fireworks Fundraising Committee member Robyn Howard said donations are lagging behind last year but the annual town fireworks would go off at dusk on July 4 from Bailey’s Hill.”We’re doing well given the economic climate,” she said. “Donations are smaller this year but people are giving. If we have to scale back and have a smaller show we will, but we will have a show.”Howard said the fireworks would cost $15,000 and the committee has raised $8,000 to date. The fireworks committee is having a fundraiser on July 2 at the Nahant town wharf from 7-9 p.m. Howard said the event would be a community square dance and admission is free.”You don’t have to know how to dance,” she said. “We’ll have a caller and it will be a lot of fun. The committee will be selling food and t-shirts. The money from that will go to the fireworks.”Jen McCarthy, who spearheads the fireworks fundraising committee, said there are a couple of ongoing fundraisers that would continue through July 4. She said residents can buy a chance for $10 to win a book of 300 $2 lottery scratch tickets. She said the winning ticket would be drawn on July 4.McCarthy designed the t-shirts the committee will be selling this year to help pay for the fireworks. The shirts, which are $15 each, are available in all sizes at Town Hall. The shirt features the slogan “Summer In Nahant and Some Aren’t.”
