“Success usually comes to those who are too busy to be looking for it.” – Henry David ThoreauIt is not often an Agganis Foundation Scholarship recipient finds himself in a sport which he tried ‘as something to do’. However, in the case of St. Mary’s senior Mike Maghsoudi, soccer and tennis have contributed to a path of success.Maghsoudi, a captain for both the boys soccer and tennis teams, did not play either sport until he reached high school. After deciding basketball and golf (which he played his freshman year) were more recreational and fun, Maghsoudi decided to take up tennis as a spring sport his sophomore year. At the urging of a friend, he decided to play organized soccer for the first time his junior season. He ended up being captain of both teams.”I had never really played either sport, but some coaches talked to me about tennis and a friend who was on the soccer team wanted me to play,” said Maghsoudi. “I just decided I would try it and play.”While playing left fullback for the soccer team, the Spartan captain led the team to an 8-7-2 record and a 10th seed in the Massachusetts State Tournament. The Spartans this season were ousted in the North semifinals by Georgetown. He is also a two time Catholic Central League All-Star for soccer. For tennis, Maghsoudi took the court as part of the first doubles team and led his team to a 7-8 record.”Playing soccer for St. Mary’s was a great experience,” said Maghsoudi. “I really like the teamwork, communication, and the chance to lead the team.”While the draw of soccer was in teamwork and camaraderie, the draw of tennis was different.”With tennis is there is always a challenge. You always have to push yourself to get better,” said Maghsoudi.Still, it is not just the athletic achievements that make Maghsoudi. The co-salutatorian also served as his class president from his sophomore through his senior year. Maghsoudi is a member of the National Honor Society and has also partaken in other extra curricular activities such as Mock Trial. During his time at St. Mary’s Maghsoudi struck a balance between the classroom and the athletic field.Maghsoudi will be attending Babson College in the fall with a focus on finance and economics. Maghsoudi first became interested in the world of finance after he took a class in which there was a month long project working money in the stock market.”I am happy about going to Babson. I am looking to be an investment banker and I find myself really drawn to it,” said Maghsoudi. “After I took the class I have been keeping up with it, reading magazines.”When Maghsoudi is not on the playing field or studying up or even recreationally golfing, you may find him working his summer job or teaching himself to play guitar or piano.”I just learned how to play (the piano) from watching some lessons on You Tube,” said Maghsoudi. “You can learn anything on there.”
