Tedesco Cup to begin today

June 26, 2009 by Matthew Roy

MARBLEHEAD – For the past 44 years, golfers have come to Tedesco Country Club in Marblehead to compete for the honor of winning the prestigious Tedesco Cup. Today, starting at 7 a.m., 120 2-man teams will commence the quest of putting their names among the list of winners in one of the biggest tournaments on the North Shore every year. The teams will tee off the 1st and 10th tees in the best ball, net score format. There is also a trophy awarded to the team that has the lowest gross score over the two days of play. For everyone involved, following up last year’s drama, which turned into a family affair, will be hard to do.The 44th rendition of the tournament was plagued by the weather from the beginning as a 2-hour rain delay in the middle of the afternoon wave of golfers resulted in play being suspended just after 9 p.m. with several teams yet to finish the opening round. After the teams returned and finished the first round, Matt Sachar and Steve Glowacz found themselves in the lead at 9-under par. That just set the stage for fireworks on a cold and gloomy Saturday.Dan Santanello and Robert Keough stormed out of the gates in the final round, going out in 7-under and eventually shooting 60 to finish at 18-under and defeat Sachar and Glowacz, Santanello’s cousin, by two strokes.Sachar and Glowacz wound up winning the gross trophy as their 6-under total was two shots better than Tom Collins-Kevin Rourke.Sachar and Glowacz are back to defend their gross title beginning at 12:33 p.m. Santanello also is back, but will be teamed with Ed Dolan this year. They take to the course this morning at 8:33.Mother Nature looked set to put a kink in everything as four consecutive days of rain had the course soggy. But the grounds crew, led by Peter Hasek, has the tough layout ready for the tournament.
