LYNN – If you’re trying to beat torrential rains, playing a five-inning mercy rule baseball game is among the best ways. That’s what the Saugus Babe Ruth 15s did last night in the opening game of the Eastern Mass. State Tournament at the Ben Bowzer complex. They jumped all over Lawrence, and won, 15-1, getting out of Dodge just as it started raining steadily. Saugus will play again in a winner’s bracket game Saturday, tentatively at 5:30. All games are at the Bowzer Complex, which is on the grounds of Breed Middle School.Click here for a photo gallery from Thursday’s action. This is all subject to change, however, as two to four inches of rain were predicted from this latest storm, which didn’t really get going until well after the Saugus game ended.”Our bats are still going strong,” said Saugus manager Ed Groark. “All I can say about this is that it was nice to win the first one, especially like this.”What made the game somewhat of a luxury is that Groark only needed starter and ace Scott Enos for two innings. After that, he went with Al Nahigian for the final three.”Scott will be very instrumental in how far we get in this tournament,” said Groark, who managed the 14s last year to a berth in the finals of the states. “So only having to use him for two is good for us.”Saugus scored five runs in the first inning and never looked back. With one out, Dan Groark doubled. With two out, Nahigian singled, and that opened up the floodgates. Successive base hits by Ken Runge, Dante Deltorto and Nick Freeling, and a walk to Derek Coderre all produced runs.It was more of the same in the second, as Saugus, winner of the District 1 tournament, scored six runs on four hits, three errors, a walk, a hit batsman and a sacrifice fly. Saugus added two each in the third and fourth innings before Lawrence finally got on the board in the top of the fifth. The tournament resumes tonight with Lynn – the host team – getting into the act at 7:45 against Plymouth.
