LYNN – Going into the New England regionals, Lynn 16U softball coach Larry Coppinger was worried about his team’s hitting. It turns out he had good reason to. After an encouraging 17-1 romp over Gorham Friday night, the bats fell silent Saturday, and the Lynners lost a 1-0 decision to Connecticut River (N.H.) and a 4-2 game to Pittsfield in New England Regional pool play. The twin losses eliminated them from the tournament; Connecticut River and Pittsfield will play an “if-necessary” game Monday at 10:30.The winner competes in the Babe Ruth softball World Series, which is held this year in Concord, N.H.Click here for a photo gallery from Saturday’s action.Lynn could do nothing against Connecticut River in the first game of the day, and its only real chance was snuffed out late in the game when a runner was thrown out at the plate trying to score on a single. The second game was equally frustrating for the Lynners, as they had their chances against Pittsfield, but couldn’t cash in. Each team scored a run in the first, Lynn’s coming when Fallon Gaudet reached on an error, stole second, took third on two straight walks, and scored on Katie Collins’ groundout. That was it for the scoring until Pittsfield eked one out in the top of the fifth off Lynn starter Mackenzie Coppinger. Cheyenne Sawyer walked and eventually scored on a single by L.A. Dinan.Lynn got that back in the bottom of the inning off Pittsfield starter Solana Carlotta. Gaudet led off with a walk, and when Coppinger tried to sacrifice her, there was confusion over the call at first. Gaudet, trying to go to third on the play, was gunned down. Coppinger, who was ruled safe at first, took the extra base and wound up on second.Sam McGuire, the runner thrown out at the plate in the first game, was sent in as a courtesy runner for Coppinger and stole third. However, she injured her ankle on the slide, and Coppinger had to come back in and run. And she scored on an infield hit by Natalie Glover. The inning could have been even more fruitful for Lynn, but after Pittsfield elected to walk Katie Collins intentionally, Hannah Byrne roped a line drive to left-center that centerfielder Kayla McNiece snared after diving full-extension. It was one of several outstanding defensive plays Pittsfield turned in Saturday.Lynn had a chance to win in the bottom of the seventh when, with runners on second and third and two out, Byrne hit a difficult grounder into the hole between second and third. However, Brittany Breault, who made several defensive gems, came up with another one, alertly tagging the runner going from second to third instead of trying for the difficult play at first.Pittsfield scored two runs in the top of the eighth, getting only one hit. Lynn had a chance in the bottom of the inning, putting runners on second and third with two out, but couldn’t push the tying runs across.
