MARBLEHEAD – As of Monday, after a difficult spring, former Bell School Principal Steven Medeiros has a new job in the central office.Superintendent of Schools Paul Dulac announced the move at a Thursday afternoon meeting with Bell School staff members and parent leaders.According to Medeiros, his new duties will include advising Dulac on school security issues and assisting School Business Manager Jonathan Goldfield on bidding matters. As the town’s plan to replace the Glover and Eveleth schools progresses, Medeiros’ knowledge of the ins and outs of elementary schools could prove helpful.Dulac could not be reached for comment. He has consistently described the situation as a personnel discussion. He has reportedly chosen an interim principal for the Bell School and a search for a permanent replacement could begin later this year.”In my contract the superintendent has the option to change my duties and that’s what he did,” Medeiros said. “I will miss the students, staff and parents at the Bell School. It’s a very nice school community, but now it’s important to focus on the best interests of the Bell School. I will help the transition in every way I can.”Beyond that he declined comment.Medeiros’ spring difficulties began when School Committee members criticized his school improvement plan May 7 for failure to address academic issues. Dulac told the committee he would meet with Medeiros to draft a revised plan but during a meeting in Dulac’s office the following afternoon, according to Medeiros, Dulac asked the principal for his resignation.Medeiros sent school parents a memo stating the situation on May 9, a Saturday. The eight-year principal said in the memo that he expected to leave the school July 31 – but he hoped he might stay on.
