BRISTOL, Conn. – Sunday’s New England regional Little League game between Peabody West and Lincoln, R.I., looked as if it was heading in the wrong direction.Lincoln had already scored three runs and had runners on second and third ? and there still weren’t any outs.Peabody West manager Dave Batchelor didn’t waste any time calling the troops together on the mound to calm them down.”I told them that it was only 3-0, and that we were going to score some runs,” he said. “The thing we didn’t want to do was get behind 5-0 or 6-0, and make it that much tougher to catch up.”It was then that fortune broke the right way for the Westerners. With Lincoln’s Chris Leclaire up, pitcher Matt Hosman uncorked a wild pitch. But catcher Traverse Briana was quick to get to it and throw to Hosman, who nailed Tyler Duquette sliding into home. Leclaire then hit a grounder to Austin Batchelor at short, who ran right at runner Alec Cronan, freezing him, and then throwing home to nail him. Hosman then struck out Brandon Yee to get out of the inning.”We practice that,” manager Batchelor said. “We practice everything we can think of.”Peabody responded, putting up five runs in the top of the second, and then hanging on to win, 10-8, to move to 2-0 in the tournament. The Westerners opened the tournament Saturday with a 13-0 win over Bangor, Maine.”We know them, they know us,” said Dave Batchelor of the two teams Sunday. “We knew they were going to hit. But we told them before the tournament started they may be surprised to find out that they’re one of the better teams in this tournament.”Right now, Batchelor says, “we’re in a pretty good position. The key here is getting into the playoffs, and having your pitching lined up.”Peabody has two more games to play in pool play – against Portsmouth, N.H., Tuesday (11) and Glastonbury, Conn., Wednesday (4, which will be telecast on NESN).The top four teams in New England advance, with the semifinals on either Thursday or Friday and the championship scheduled for Saturday at 2 p.m., to be televised on ESPN.After going meekly in the first, Peabody erupted for five runs in the second. And it all happened with two outs.A.J. DeFillipo started it off with a one-out single, but was erased at second on a fielder’s choice by Sean McGrath.Walks to Matt Gonick and Matt Correale loaded the bases before a double by Hosman scored two runs and made it 3-2.Austin Batchelor’s infield hit tied the score, and both Hosman and Batchelor came home on Briana’s single.Rhody tied it with two runs in the bottom of the second on back-to-back singles by Jeffrey Sheehen – whose two-run homer in the first helped Lincoln take the lead – and Samuel Brito.Peabody engaged in more two-out magic in the top of the third. With DeFillipo and J.J. Layton on base and two outs, Correale poked one into left field for a double that scored them both, with Correale taking third on an error. He scored moments later when Rhode Island catcher Jake Petrin tried to pick him off third and threw wildly.Nick Bona’s two-run single, scoring Briana and Michael Petrosino, made it 10-5, and then things got a little dicey.Brito’s single to right in the fourth scored two runs to make it 10-7. By then, Hosman had reached the 85-pitch limit and gave way to DeFillipo, who had an adventurous sixth. With one out, he walked Sheehan, but when Brito was called out on strikes he looked good. However, that third out proved to be elusive. Duquette singled to center, Cronan walked to load the bases, and Leclaire got a base hit that made it 10-8.”It just kept getting harder and harder,” said DeFillipo. “I pitched the other day (Saturday), too, but this was harder.””I came out and just told him we had a three-run lead, and to go right after them,” Batchelor said. “I just didn’t want any free passes.”DeFillipo got the final out, however, fanning Yee.Saturday, Peabody poured it on early and often in shutting out Maine, 13-0, in a five-inning game. Austin Batchelor pitched three innings, with
