LYNN – The 2009 version of the Gannon Silver Classic turned into a two-team duel on Sunday afternoon. And what a show they put on.Click here for a golf photo gallery. After distancing themselves from the field, the teams of Bill Wozny-Bill McCarthy and Stan Glowacz-Jim Elwell were left to settle the title for themselves. And with 500-plus people standing on the veranda overlooking the 18th green, they didn’t disappoint.Trailing by two shots in the final fairway, Elwell somehow holed out on one bounce from 150 yards for an eagle three that forced a playoff after McCarthy two putted from 50 feet.In the playoff, Glowacz and Elwell let a chance to win get away on the first extra hole and Wozny made them pay, draining a 25-footer for birdie on the second playoff hole to wrest away the title. The two teams were so good for two days that they finished five shots ahead of third-place Ken Lowry and John Riccardelli. On the first extra hole, Elwell blew his drive into the fifth fairway while Glowacz safely put his ball in play. McCarthy found trouble off the tee with Wozny finding the short grass. After Elwell played an excellent recovery over the trees into the rough just short of the green, Glowacz also came up short in two. McCarthy chipped out and put his third shot short left while Wozny came up 20 yards short before playing a nifty pitch to 15 feet left of the hole.Elwell’s approach shot would be even better, coming to rest four feet short of the cup. And when Glowacz chipped to eight feet below the hole, things were setting up nicely for their team. After McCarthy 3-putted for a double bogey, Wozny nearly holed his sidehill putt, giving Glowacz and Elwell an opening to win. Glowacz was first, but his putt broke off at the last second and grazed the lower edge of the cup.Elwell then found the same edge of the hole on his par putt, sending the teams on to the second tee. After Elwell found trouble with his drive, Glowacz piped a shot right down the center to within 80 yards of the cup. McCarthy found the right rough and Wozny the left rough off the tee.Elwell would chip out and wind up with a par putt while McCarthy found a greenside bunker with his second shot. Wozny then crafted a well-played pitch shot under a tree to 25 feet, throwing the pressure back to Glowacz.Glowacz hit his wedge shot 15 feet short and right of the hole, throwing the onus back on Wozny after McCarthy took two swings to escape the trap. This time, though, Wozny’s putt was pure, finding the dead center of the cup to finally end things. The two teams broke away from a pack that was tightly bunched after Saturday’s play, with 27 teams within six shots of the lead.Mike Marks-Jim Abernathy; Dick Donahue-Doug Raleigh; and Tony Rigol-Rick Cashman shared fourth place at 14-under. Jay Fiste-Jack Hollow and Mike Kmiec-Chris Warren followed at minus-13.
