SAUGUS – Traffic on Route 1 north is backed up in to Revere and several businesses and residents are without water this afternoon following a massive water main break in Saugus.
DPW Director Joe Attubato said a main located in front of McDonalds burst in two separate places around 5 a.m. Thursday.Town employees have been working throughout the day to put a new piece into the main and hope to have water turned back on by 2:30 p.m.As for the traffic, Attubato said the gridlock could continue into the late afternoon and early evening as the town must fill in that portion of the street and repair a 10-foot section of the road that was cut open.”The call came in about 5 a.m. that the pipe broke in two places,” he said. “Hopefully we can have the water turned on in about an hour or so.”Attubato said it looked like the problem was caused by a combination of heavy wear from all of the Route 1 traffic and sub-par materials, such as rocks, that were used to fill in the area around the main when it was first put in.
