McClory: To find fish in warm weather, go deep

Last week was a great one to be on vacation, if you enjoy the water sports. The hazy, hot and humid weather is great for the kids; it gets them off the computer and on the water. Our boat hadn’t seen this much use in years, pulling water skiers and tubers from dawn to dusk. As for the fishing here on Sebago, the hot weather last week had driven the fish down to find the cooler, more comfortable water. We were able to find them, using downriggers and lead core line. We found the fish at 60 feet fishing over 80 feet of water, trolling 2 mph, which is a little different than in past years. So far, our favorite and most successful lure is an orange and gold flash king. A close second is the green and silver DB smelt. These two lures have accounted for 14 lake trout and seven salmon in three outings. We ran into Dave White from Lynn and his brother Tim at the gas dock. They often fish Sebago and are also having a good year. Incidentally, if you need gas or marine service while on the lake, stop in and see Charlie Frechette at Sebago Lake Marina. Charlie is also an avid fisherman who spends a lot of time on the water and will always share his successful methods of the week and may even give you a lure or two to try.The Fisheries & Wildlife Board will hold its August meeting on Thursday, Aug. 27, at 2 p.m. at the Hubbardston Rod and Gun Club, 55 Williamsville Road, Hubbardston. A public hearing to establish seasons and bag limits for the 2009-2010 migratory game bird seasons will be held this same day at 7 p.m. at the Hubbardston Road and Gun Club. Public comment about the migratory game bird regulation proposals is also invited. As in past years, the board will vote on migratory game bird seasons and bag limits immediately following this hearing. On July 28, the Fisheries and Wildlife Board unanimously voted to prohibit the use of lead sinkers, lead weights, and lead fishing jigs with a mass of less than one ounce in the inland waters of Massachusetts. This regulatory change will not take effect until 2012.The early Canada goose hunting season dates are Sept. 8-25, with hunters allowed a bag limit of seven birds per day. The early season provides goose hunters with ample hunting and gives more time to landowners to allow hunters to reduce the size of nuisance flocks of resident geese. Hunters planning to hunt ducks, geese, woodcock, and other migratory birds must also be registered with the Harvest Information Program (HIP) after purchasing a hunting license. This free registration number may be obtained by calling 1-800-WETLAND.Turkey enthusiasts are reminded that from now until Aug. 31, interested citizens are encouraged to report any sightings of turkey broods (families) for MassWildlife’s annual brood survey. A brood survey form to report this information may be found on the MassWildlife website at www.mass.gov/masswildlife.Antlerless deer permit notification cards were mailed to deer hunters in mid-August. All applicants selected for their Wildlife Management Zone (WMZ) of choice were notified of their permit with a yellow postcard. To ensure receipt of the permit by archery season, the postcard and $5 fee must be returned by Sept. 3 to: “Deer Permit” MassWildlife FHQ, 1 Rabbit Hill Road, Westborough, MA 01581. Applicants not selected for their WMZ of choice were sent pink postcards in mid-August to allow applicants to re-apply in WMZs where permit allocations exceeded applications. The final opportunity for obtaining an antlerless deer permit, or acquiring additional permits, will occur Oct. 5 when remaining permits will be available for sales over-the-counter. Specific information on WMZ availability will be posted on the agency website in late September.Don’t forget, Labor Day Monday starts the 33rd Annual Kittery Trading Post Septemberfest Celebration. It’s an exciting weeklong event filled with specials in every department plus chances to win over $15,000 in free merchandise prizes. There’s always a wide variety of demonstr
