August 25, 2009 by Thor Jourgensen

LYNN – Daniel Bowden was driving to his mother?s East Lynn home to pick up lunch money before heading to work Sunday when he was struck by a driver with multiple motor vehicle violations.Western Avenue resident John Harrington said he watched Bowden attempt to bring his Suzuki motorcycle to a halt and avoid the minivan turning off Western into Anoka Place.?She tried to beat him into the dead end street,” Harrington said Monday as he described how Bowden broadsided the van before crashing into the curb near Harrington?s 653 Western Avenue apartment building.Another building resident, Mike Richards, said he heard “a big crash” at about 11 a.m. and rushed to help Bowden.?I checked for a pulse, couldn?t get it and told everyone to stand back,” Richards said.Bowden, 26, was pronounced dead at Massachusetts General Hospital after being taken to the Boston hospital from Salem Hospital.Police identified the driver of the 2008 Honda Odyssey as Rosalinda Lumumba-Nkrumah, 54, of Lynn. Police are investigating the crash.Driving history information for Nkrumah provided by the Registry of Motor Vehicles lists incidents under her name dating back to 1999 including failure to yield to a Peabody pedestrian on May 19, 2009.A January 2002 incident in Lynn involving failure to stop was logged under her name by the Registry.Paul Baribeau, Bowden?s stepfather, said Bowden grew up in Lynn and attended English High School. He enjoyed snowboarding and motorcycles and worked for a trucking company.Baribeau said Bowden spent time Saturday night with brothers Mark and Eric and enjoyed Baribeau?s 7-year-old son, Drew.?Everyone was together the night before,” Baribeau said.A woman who answered Nkrumah?s telephone Monday said Nkrumah “was unavailable.”
