LYNN – East Lynn Pop Warner officials continued to neither deny nor confirm rampant reports that a number of juveniles charged with viciously beating a 30-year-old Guatemalan immigrant in July are being allowed to participate in pre-season practices. However, league president Duke Wilson, who is also a coach in the program, did say after a meeting with the board of directors Wednesday night that the group is in compliance with national rules and regulations.”As the president ? I want to assure the families and friends of the program that the program is in compliance with Pop Warner rules and regulations, and that the mission of the program is intact.”However, Wilson also said that, “in regards to inquiries concerning participants in the East Lynn Pop Warner program, as participants ? range from ages 7-15, they are juveniles.”As such ELPW will continue to decline to comment on any participants in the program.”Six juveniles in all have been charged with beating Damian Merida, 30, who is still in serious condition as the result of the assault. Parents began to come forward Tuesday, confirming that at least three – and possibly more – of the alleged assailants were being allowed to practice while wearing ankle bracelet monitors after being released in the custody of their parents.Wilson, in his statement, said, “the mission of East Lynn Pop Warner continues to focus on developing the body, mind, and spirit of the youth in Lynn.”In particular, the football program continues to instruct our children in the fundamentals of football, but also promote life-long values dealing with self-discipline, determination, teamwork, sportsmanship, and adversity.”ELPW remains committed to enabling young people in Lynn to benefit from participation in team sports and activities in a safe and structured environment.”
