The Bishop Fenwick girls soccer team had to wait a few extra days to get its season started thanks to a rainout on Saturday, but the Crusaders shook off the first-game jitters in a hurry in a 1-0 win over rival St. Mary’s Wednesday at Manning Field.Click here for a photo gallery. The Spartans, who were 3-0 heading into the game, came close a couple of times, especially near the end, but Fenwick goalie Jill Dean of Lynn, a senior captain, was up to the task.”It was definitely a tough game, but it’s always nice to get that first one,” Fenwick coach Karen Guillemette said. “There were a lot of nervous jitters at the beginning – a lot of anticipation.”The game was scoreless at the half, but Rose Fantozzi finally broke the ice with a goal six minutes into the second half. Ellen O’Leary had the assist. Fenwick is 1-0 and St. Mary’s is 3-1, 1-1 Catholic Central League.”It was a great game,” St. Mary’s coach Jim Foley said. “We had a couple of chances at the end ? We went at them the last five minutes.”Foley said his keeper, Angela Dandreo, had an excellent game in net.Lynnfield 2, No. Reading 1At Lynnfield, sophomore Scout Benson put the Pioneers on the board nine minutes into the game when she collected a gem of a through pass from Jamie Harris and put it in. North Reading tied things up four minutes into the second half, but Lynnfield pulled out the win on a goal by Alex Prach with 13 minutes left in the game. Nareh Sahakian was in net for the win.Lynnfield (3-0) was particularly impressive at midfield with Lauren McCarthy, Abby Tobin and Tori Copelas getting the job done.Mystic Valley 5, Tech 0At Manning Field, the Tigers (0-3, 0-2 Commonwealth Conference) put pressure on the Mystic Valley net, but couldn’t put one in. Defensively, Tech struggled a bit. Arthina Robert (forward) and Shaniqua Holcombe (center) played well.
