No offense, but Fenwick is one touchdown better than Salem

SALEM ? What this game lacked in offense, it made up for in drama, especially in the fourth periodAlex Crecco’s 2-yard touchdown run with 44:41 left in the game gave Bishop Fenwick the lead, and Joe Bona’s interception at the Crusaders’ 13-yard line with 2:28 remaining sealed a 6-0 win over Salem, Friday night, at Bertram Field .Fenwick improved to 1-1, while Salem fell to 0-2.”We had such a bad practice on Monday, I didn’t think we were going to win a game all season,” Crusaders coach Dave Woods said. “It was a bit of a struggle offensively, but we came up with some huge plays on defense.”Salem twice drove deep into Fenwick territory, but both times came away without scoring. The Witches’ final drive of the first half ended at the Crusaders’ 1-yard line when time ran out, and Bona’s interception killed the other drive.”It was a tough game to lose,” Salem coach Scott Connolly said. “We moved the ball better on offense than we did last week (in a loss to Winthrop), but we couldn’t put any points on the scoreboard.”The winning drive came after a long snap that went over the head of punter Daniel Dobrosielski, who did well to get the ball back to Salem’s 41, with 8:39 left.Fenwick gave the ball to Crecco (21 carries, 122 yards) seven straight times on the drive. The big play was a 20-yard gain on third-and-5. Four plays later, Crecco clipped the pylon in the left front corner of the end zone on a sweep. The conversion attempt failed.Salem got a good kick return by Edwin Guzman to his own 38, and two plays later on third-and 12, Brad Skeffington (9-21-1-141) found Guzman for a 23-yard gain to Fenwick’s 41-yard line. That set up a 26-yard pass to Chris Bozarjian (4 catches-81 yards) who caught the ball in a seam between the linebackers and the secondary and ran across the field all the way to the Crusaders’ 9.Skeffington was flushed out of the pocket to his left on the next play, and tried to throw the ball away. Bona grabbed it before it hit the turf for the key pick.Crecco ran the ball on seven of the next nine plays and picked up two keys first downs that burned all of Salem’s five remaining timeouts.”That was just some great, tough running tonight by Crecco,” Woods said.Salem recovered a muffed punt early in the first quarter, but turned it over on downs at Fenwick’s 28. Fenwick’s deepest penetration of the first half was a drive to Salem’s 27 , but back-to-back sacks by Scott Kugel ended the drive. The Witches took over at their own 10 with 2:09 left in the half, but got a 24-yard scramble by Skeffington, who then found Bozarjian on three consecutive plays to advance the ball to Fenwick’s 15.After an incompletion, Skeffington picked up 13 yards, but Salem’s David Kendrick was stopped short of the goal line. The officials signaled an end to the half, though six seconds still showed on the clock.”We thought we still had some time, but the official time is kept on the field,” said Connolly said.
