PEABODY – U.S. Rep. John F. Tierney will hold an Academy Night for high school students from the Sixth Congressional District who are interested in learning about the admissions process to the nation’s service academies.The Academy Night will be held Thursday, Sept. 24 at the North Shore Community College campus in Danvers, in the Health Professions Building, room F119, from 7-9 p.m.”Students are invited to meet with service academy representatives,” said Tierney spokeswoman Catherine Ribeiro, noting that representatives from the U.S. Naval Academy, the U.S. Air Force Academy, the U.S. Military Academy and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy will attend and speak with prospective students.Additionally, representatives from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, Maine Maritime Academy, Massachusetts Maritime Academy and Norwich University will be available to discuss the admissions process with potential applicants, she said.Students who hope to attend the U.S. Naval Academy, U.S. Air Force Academy, U.S. Military Academy or the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy must send a completed application packet to Tierney’s Peabody district office by Nov. 1. During November, Tierney’s Academy Review Board will evaluate each application, conduct interviews and make recommendations for names to be submitted for nomination to the respective academies in December. In order to be considered eligible, all applicants must be U.S. citizens, legal residents of the Massachusetts congressional district, unmarried with no children, and at least 17 years of age but no older than 23 as of July 1, 2010.
