Golf: Freshman Goulos leads Peabody past Saugus

Peabody High freshman Athan Goulos played like a veteran Tuesday, taking home medalist honors by shooting a 33 in the Tanners’ 42 1/2-33 1/2 win over Saugus at Cedar Glen Golf Course.Goulos’ effort earned him a 7-2 win in the two spot. Also picking up wins for the Tanners were No. 1 Sean Craven, who shot a 38 and won 6 1/2-2 1/2; Kyle Franey, a 38 for a 5-4 win; Evan Gagnon, 43 for a 7-2 win; and Ken D’Agostino, 41 for a 5-4 win.”I was happy to see Goulos shoot a 33,” Peabody coach Rick Sapienza said. “He’s only a ninth grader. We kind of bounced back after our loss to Marblehead.”Saugus had wins from Nick Freehling, 5-4, and Dan Groark, 5-4, at four and five, respectively. Saugus is 3-3, 2-1 in the Northeastern Conference.St. John’s 228, St. Mary’s 276At Salem Country Club, the Eagles steamrolled their way to a 5-0 record with strong rounds from Nick Velonis, who shot a 2-under 34; Nick McLaughlin, 36; Nick Orluk of Lynn, 39; and Nick Pandelena (39). The Prep has a big league match against undefeated BC high next.St. Mary’s (1-4, 1-2 Catholic Central league) was led by Kevin McCarthy, Jack McCarthy (45) and Anthony Cordillo (46).Swampscott 55 1/2, Revere 16 1/2At Cedar Glen, the Big Blue (3-0) turned in a dominating performance, led by Alex Patkin, who shot a 1-under 34; Justin Massey (36); Dan Owens (38); Trevor Massey (38); and Sean McGovern (39).Winthrop 49, English 21At Gannon Golf Course, Joe Lannon had a nice round in the No. 1 spot, shooting a 38, but he lost to Winthrop’s Jake Rand (37), 5-4. At No. 2, Pat Cullen, English, and Robert Swanson tied, as did Nick Newhall, English, and Mario Pasco. English is 0-4.Beverly 36, Marblehead 36At Tedesco Country Club, the Magicians (3-0-1) and Panthers battled to a tie with Chris Neumann (40) and Connor Green (41) turning in the best performances for Marblehead in the win.Hamilton-Wenham 162, Lynnfield 143At Hamilton, the Pioneers (3-1) suffered the first ding on their record despite a solid outing by Joe Anderson 932 points).
