Girls soccer: English defense continues to shine

The defense for both English and Marblehead bent but didn’t break in a 0-0 tie Tuesday at Manning Field.English coach Ed McNeil has been happy with his defense, but is hoping to see the offense kick it up a notch.”Our team defense has been great. We’ve only given up one goal in our last four games,” he said. “Unfortunately, we’re having a tough time finding a way to score.”English’s two-time Northeastern Conference All-Star goalie, Brittany Goulet (15 saves), had her third shutout in the last four games.Shawna Henry, Mackenzie Clark, Shannon Kidney, Cara Crowley, and Maura Coyle all played strong games for the Bulldogs.English (2-4-2) plays Danvers Thursday.Danvers 6, Revere 0At Revere, the Falcons’ Corey Persson and Brittany Russo both had hat tricks. The duo gave the Falcons a 5-0 lead at half, and they never looked back.Danvers (6-0) plays English Thursday.Saugus 4, Classical 0At Manning Field, the Sachems had four different players score. Alyssa Wilkie and Ashley Aldred made it 2-0 by the half and Lauren Donati and Madison Tomallio added the final two.For Classical, Mackenzie Coppinger had a good game in net. Kelley Deveney and Christine Francois also had strong games as well.Classical is 1-7.Peabody 7, Gloucester 2At Peabody, Hayley Dowd had four goals and a pair of assists. Victoria Digiacomo, Angela Ellison, and Catarina Rocha handled the rest of the scoring with a goal each. Also playing well was keeper Brienna Griffin (7 saves). Peabody is 6-0.Beverly 4, Winthrop 2At Beverly, Nicole Black scored a goal and assisted on Haley Benson’s tally for the Vikings.Winthrop (1-7) will play its next game Thursday against Peabody.
