School: Fenwick football rolls past Hamilton-Wenham

October 6, 2009 by Matthew Roy

After having to wait two days to finally take the field thanks to the weather, the Bishop Fenwick football team shook off a sluggish first half against Hamilton-Wenham on Monday by blowing the Generals off the field in the second half.Led by a punishing ground game and stifling defense, the Crusaders ripped off 22 second-half points to even their season record at 2-2 following a 30-0 pasting of the Generals.”We’re starting to figure out who we are as an offense,” Fenwick coach Dave Woods said. “And the defense was just outstanding.”Despite running 41 plays to Hamilton-Wenham’s eight in the first 22 minutes, the Crusaders only held an 8-0 lead after Alex Crecco’s two-yard run in the second quarter. A Chris Renzulli to Tyler Thomann pass added the 2-point conversion.”We were moving the ball well but couldn’t take advantage of it,” Woods said. The second half would be all Fenwick as the Crusaders shifted from their traditional Wing-T offense to the I-formation and proceeded to put Hamilton-Wenham away.Renzulli scored early in the third on a 21-yard run with Crecco’s conversion rush upping the margin to 16-0. Later in the quarter, Jimmy Oliveri plunged in from the four to give the Crusaders a 22-0 lead after three.”Oliveri and Crecco really ran the ball great,” Woods said.Crecco’s second touchdown of the day, from three yards out, was the lone score of the fourth quarter. Renzulli’s pass to Pat Lyons added the final two points for Fenwick.”This was a team that was a little more on our level, and we played pretty well,” Woods said. “In the second half, the line really took control of the game.”The Crusaders have a short week ahead as they will play at Swampscott on Saturday (2:30).GOLFSt. Mary’s 159, AC 129At Gannon Golf Course, the Spartans (5-4, 4-2 Catholic Central League) had strong matches from Kevin McCarthy, who shot a 37 for 31 points.
