SAUGUS – Sometimes one team is just too much for another. Saturday at Stackpole Field in Saugus, English rolled into town and stomped the hosting Sachems, 41-0.In a game characterized by big offensive plays by English and offensive miscues by Saugus, from the very beginning of the game the final outcome seemed to be preordained by the football gods. The opening possession belonged to the Bulldogs (3-1) who swiftly moved down the field in three plays with English junior quarterback Tyllor MacDonald finding a wide open Ryan Woumn 36 yards downfield for a score with only 48 seconds gone.Saugus, in what turned out to be its best drive of the day, moved 79 yards on its ensuing possession. However, the Sachems were snake-bitten, as their scoring attempt came apart after losing a fumble on the one. It was the closest the Sachems came to scoring all day.”I concerned myself today with the fact that there were SATs today and the kids might come out a little sluggish,” said English coach Peter Holey. “I thought we did on defense on first.””We missed some opportunities early, especially not scoring when we were down on the one,” Saugus coach Mike Broderick said. “We just couldn’t recover from that.”The opening possessions for each team were foreshadowing for the rest of the game. Later in the first quarter MacDonald found Travonne Berry-Rogers on a 37-yard touchdown strike. The Bulldogs headed into the locker room at the half up 20-0 after captain Sam Hill found the end zone from 15 yards out.For Saugus, Vincent Talluto earned each of his 104 yards. In the first half he put together 59 yards of rushing, combining with quarterback John Moore and running back Stephen Almquist to move the ball. Saugus totaled 119 yards of rushing in the half.In the second half, the size and numbers advantage of English really started to show. After failing to gather a first down on their first possession, Saugus then gave way English’s rushing attack. Jermaine Patterson pounded in the ball from two yards out for a touchdown early in the third quarter. From there the English defense kept getting the ball back into the hands of its offense. The next three Saugus possessions ended up in lost fumbles. Two of the turnovers turned into points for the Bulldogs.”It’s a difficult offense for us to defend, when it is going full speed,” said Holey of the Sachems’ plays. “The kids had to get used to it, and they did.””They just wore us out. They are too big,” said Broderick. “In the first half we lost our focus and this is what happens when you lose your focus against a good team.”In a spectacular play, while facing third-and-24, MacDonald slashed and burned the Saugus secondary on his way to a 42-yard rushing touchdown. Taron Seaforth also scored on a five-yard rush to help push the Bulldogs’ point to 41.”Our quarterback is our team. He (MacDonald) is a leader, a quiet leader. He’s a leader how I like guys to lead – with their actions on the field,” said Holey.
