School: Saugus girls upend St. Mary’s in soccer

For Saugus girls soccer coach Chris Coviello, Saturday’s game at home against St. Mary’s was a chance to take on the team that he was an assistant coach for until this season.The Sachems (8-2) made the reunion a sweet one for their coach as Jess Capozzi scored midway through the first half and the defense made the goal stand up in a 1-0 win.”I knew that they wouldn’t give up many goals,” Coviello said. “And we were fortunate to get one through.”Saugus netminder Melissa Toomey recorded the shutout. The Sachems are back in action on Tuesday against Revere.Danvers 2, Fenwick 0At Donaldson Field in Peabody, the game was scoreless at halftime before Kellie MacDonald scored twice in the final 40 minutes to help keep the Falcons (9-0-1) unbeaten.Brittany Russo assisted on MacDonald’s first goal and Corey Persson picked up the helper on the insurance goal.Fenwick (2-3-4) got solid efforts from Alicia Viletti, Maura Doyle and Danielle DiNuccio on defense.BOYS SOCCERSaugus 6, Matignon 1At Cambridge, Carmen Bordanaro and Derek Cordair each scored twice to pace the Sachems to the easy win. Alex Ung and R.J. Gossett each had one goal.St. John’s 2, Xaverian 1At Danvers, the Eagles (6-4, 4-1 Catholic Conference) got goals from Sean Callahan and Zach Hathaway in the second half to get the win.Matt Kicinski had an assist and the Eagles also got good games from sweeper Jim O’Leary and striker Will Nuccio.FIELD HOCKEYWeston 2, Fenwick 0At Peabody, the Crusaders (8-2-1) had a goal called back but gave the reigning Division 1 state champions a fight.
