St. Mary’s sails past Trinity Catholic

October 12, 2009 by Matthew Roy

LYNN – For the St. Mary’s football team, Saturday’s 41-0 win over Trinity Catholic probably came at a very opportune time. With Catholic Central League/Large play set to begin on Saturday at Manning Field (7:30) against Arlington Catholic, the Spartans were able to rest some players and got many of their underclassmen game reps.”Everyone got an opportunity to play,’ St. Mary’s coach Matt Durgin said. “They got some experience and we were able to rest some kids.”The Spartans (4-1) held the visitors to minus-1 yards in total offense for the game and did not have to play a starter after the first quarter.Todd Collier got the St. Mary’s express started when he took the opening kickoff 81 yards for a touchdown and a 7-0 lead after Josh Stueve’s extra point. The Falcons promptly fumbled on their first snap from center and St. Mary’s recovered at the 23.Two plays later, quarterback Cam Mulvey scrambled 14 yards untouched for a score and a 14-0 lead just 1:37 into the contest.Things didn’t get much better for Trinity on the next possession as Angel Medina coughed up the ball and the Spartans recovered at the Falcon 24.Mulvey didn’t waste much time striking as he hit Collier for a touchdown and a 21-0 lead halfway through the first quarter. The Falcons went three-and-out on their next possession and Ryan Barrows returned the punt 60 yards untouched for another touchdown and a commanding 28-0 lead after one quarter. After forcing another punt early in the second quarter, the Spartans struck again as Matt McDermott took a handoff and dashed 69 yards through the defense for a 34-0 lead at halftime. After kickoff to begin the second half, the Spartan defense forced yet another three-and-out by the Falcons. This time it took only one play to score as Kevin Romulous raced 60 yards up the right sideline to close out the scoring and make it 41-0.”We know what’s ahead of us,” Durgin said about his team opening league play next week. “We’ve got a big challenge ahead and we’re focused on taking it one game at a time.”
