REVERE ? For the Revere High football team, this game was a gut check. For Peabody, it was more like a gut punch. The Patriots (2-4) returned two fumbles for touchdowns ? including one by Soheal Arachiche from his own end zone ? and then held off Peabody’s bid for a 2-point conversion with 1:14 left in the game to win, 27-25, Friday night, at Della Russo Stadium.”Just a great high school football game,” Revere coach Lou Cicatelli said. “We finally put together a full offensive football game. We’ve been ahead in every game except Medford, but we haven’t been able to close it out until tonight.”Full marks to the Tanners (2-4) for refusing to quit after Revere’s Trea Weathers (15 carries-126 yards, 3 TDs) scored on a 36-yard touchdown run with 2:47 left in the game, but Peabody will rue the two turnovers ? one on the opening kickoff and the other on Revere’s 1-yard line ? that probably cost it the game,.”Probably shocked,” said Peabody coach Scott Wlasuk, when asked about his reaction to the loss. “I’m not taking anything away from Revere by any means, but we really made two unheard-of mistakes.”Weathers and Revere got a gift on the opening kickoff. The ball got knocked loose from Jamal Abu-Hijleh at the 11-yard line, and Weathers picked it up and ran into the end zone. The try for two points was no good and Revere led, 6-0, just 12 seconds into the game.Undaunted, the Tanners took the ball 68 yards in 12 plays on their first offensive possession to tie the game at 6-6. Mark D’Addario (36 carries-188 yards, 3 TDs) dashed in from the 7-yard line with 3:51 left in the first quarter.Peabody took advantage of a Revere turnover in the second quarter for its second touchdown. Michael Garrity jumped on a pitchout from Paul Norton to Weathers that missed its connection at the Patriots’ 45, and three plays layer Brady Doyle went in from the 5-yard-line. Justin Provencher’s PAT kick was good and the Tanners led, 13-6.Revere drove the ball to Peabody’s 8-yard line, but ran out of time and downs at the end of the second quarter. The Patriots took the second-half kickoff and went on their best drive of the game, an 83-yard, 10-play march that included some rugged running by Weathers and a 23-yard pass from Norton to Chris Adreani. Weathers bowled in from the 4-yard line with 5:53 left in the third quarter. The PAT kick was wide right and Peabody still had a 13-12 lead. The Tanners also moved the ball well on their first drive of the second half, and were poised to score from third-and-goal from the Revere 1. On the first play of the fourth quarter, D’Addario leaped for the end zone, but the ball squirted out of his hands to Arachiche, who was seven yards deep in the end zone.Arachiche raced to the left and, with Peabody’s offense bunched in the middle of the field on a dive play, had plenty of room in front of him. He finally shook off the last would-be Peabody tackler at about the 25-yard line and ran into the end zone. Norton hit Adreani for the 2-point conversion and the Patriots led, 20-13, with 10:45 left in the game.Peabody rallied and got a 1-yard touchdown run by D’Addario on a 68-yard drive, but Provencher’s kick was wide right and Revere still led by one point with 4:30 left in the game.On its ensuing drive, Revere picked up one first down but was then faced with a third-and-5 from Peabody’s 48. Norton found Jessie Kielpinski for an 8-yard gain, and then Weathers ran the ball into the end zone on the next play. Bryan Robichaud’s kick was good and Revere led, 27-19.”It took (Weathers) a while to get going, but he was outstanding in the second half,” Cicatelli said. “We don’t have a lot of depth, so we rely on him a lot on both sides of the ball.”Doyle returned the ensuing kickoff to the Patriots’ 37, and a personal foul on Revere suddenly put the Tanners at the 22-yard line. D’Addario carried on four of the next five plays, the last of which was a touchdown run from nine yards out. Peabody needed a 2-point conversion to tie, but D’Addar
