October 20, 2009 by Matthew Roy

The fans who came to Bertram Field on Monday watched as Lynn Classical and Salem basically threw defense out the window and lit up the scoreboard at an amazing clip.Salem’s Edwin DeMoya scored four times as it looked like the Witches were going to come away with the upset win. But Classical’s Salvador Castro had other ideas, scoring against Dan McCarthy with a minute to go to salvage a 5-5 tie.”We were lucky that we got out with a point,” Classical coach Joe Skahan said.Salem (5-6-3) jumped to a 2-0 lead before the Rams (9-2-3) rallied to tie the game at halftime. Miguel Castro had a pair of goals and an assist for Classical with Jonathan DeLeon and Abdoulay Bah also having goals. The Witches’ other goal came off the foot of Nuur Muhammed.Tech 1, Chelsea 0At Manning Field, the Tigers (8-3-2, 8-1-2 Commonwealth Conference) avenged their only league loss this season and played their way right back into the race for a league title.”The kids played phenomenal today,” Tech coach Fred Gallo said. “Chelsea is a really tough team and we were able to stop them.”The game’s only goal came 10 minutes in when Francisco Franco scored on a penalty kick after Richard Jones-Alas was taken down in the penalty area. After that, the game belonged to the Tech defense and goaltender Jonathan DeLeon.”Defensively, we played unbelievable,” Gallo said. “And Jonathan was right there to stop anything if it got through.”Pedro Blas, Gustavo Rodriguez and Anthony Rodriguez led the Tech back line.Swampscott 5, Saugus 1At Anna Parker in Saugus, the game was tied at 1-1 in the first half before the Big Blue (4-5-2, 4-5-1 NEC) ripped off the game’s final four goals.Click here for a photo gallery.Kyle Taylor led the Swampscott attack with a hat trick and an assist. Ben Rosen and Niclas Bieser also added their first career varsity goals.”It was nice to get back on the winning track,” Swampscott coach Mike Chase said.Marblehead 0, Gloucester 0At Newell Stadium in Gloucester, neither team could get much going offensively as sloppy field conditions thwarted each offense’s attack.Danvers 6, Winthrop 0At Miller Field in Winthrop, Chris Ciampa and Costa Hatziioannou each scored twice as the Falcons (10-2-3, 9-0-2) stayed unbeaten in NEC play. Eric Marino and Eric Martin each added a goal while Andrew Mikulski had his fourth shutout of the season.
