Roundup: Team effort key for Fenwick volleyball in win over St. Mary’s

The Bishop Fenwick volleyball team had a complete team effort to defeat St. Mary’s 3-0 at Conigliaro Gym on Thursday.Click here for a photo gallery.At St. Mary’s, the scoring would break down 25-12, 25-12, and 25-18.Fenwick coach Adam DeBaggis praised Kaela Murphy and Dianna Tauro for very strong performances.Murphy and Tauro combined for 15 kills.For St. Mary’s, Brittany Lane, Maria Nazarro and Tori Faieta played well. St. Mary’s coach Dave Giarusso was pleased with his team’s effort.”We played hard every game,” Giarusso said. “We just didn’t catch a break and ended up on the wrong end.”Fenwick (11-5) plays Spellman next Friday.GIRLS SOCCERLynnfield 2, Ipswich 0At Lynnfield, the Pioneers’ Jaime Harris and Whitney Montesanto led the way. It was a quiet first half until Harris scored with seven minutes remaining in the half for a 1-0 lead, which remained the score at halftime.Montesanto scored in the first minute of the second half to make the score 2-0.”It was a great game for our team today,” Lynnfield coach Mark Vermont said. “We controlled most the game and everyone played well.”Lynnfield is now 10-3-2.Revere 3, Classical 0At Manning Field, Classical would wake up when it was too late. Revere had a 3-0 lead at the end of the first half and would never look back. Classical’s Kelly Deveney had a strong game for the defense.”It was a struggle in the first half,” Classical coach Marcy Durgin said. “In the second half, we played much better, not giving up a goal.”Classical plays Everett Saturday.Northeast 3, Tech 0At Wakefield, the Tigers (3-10) got a stellar game in goal from Mah Weah but couldn’t sustain any offense against the Golden Knights.BOYS SOCCERIpswich 2, Lynnfield 0At Ipswich, Ipswich took an early 2-0 lead and impressed Lynnfield coach Brent Munroe.”We beat them earlier in the year, but they really improved from then,” Munroe said. “They played well and earned the win today.”Lynnfield (7-5-2) plays Fenwick Saturday.GOLFGloucester 58, Classical 14At Bass Rocks G.C. in Gloucester, Classical had solid play despite the result. Classical’s Connor McCall won his match 5-4. Seniors Peter Rondeau, Alex Messina and Paul Strakas all played well in their final high school matches. Classical ended up with a 2-9 record.
