MARBLEHEAD – An old song tells us about “people who need people.”When artist Dianne Jenkins needs people, she creates them.”People and Houses and Everyday Art” is the title of Jenkins’s art exhibit at the Abbot Public Library.The Swampscott artist will show her people, houses and drawings at the library’s Virginia A. Carten Gallery from Thursday, Nov. 5-Monday, Nov. 30.Jenkins makes people – life-sized to tiny – each with their own weird personality. She uses found and collected objects in her artwork. The cloth people are sewn with are from old sweaters, Cracker-Jack toys, buttons, doilies, string, wire, shells and other doodads.The houses are painted, stamped and collaged with twigs, old postage stamps, nails and plastic stuff. Her drawings, one a day, include pen and ink self portraits, abstract patterns and the ephemera of daily life. The people will be located throughout the library as well as in the gallery and everyone is invited to play with the dollhouses on display.The opening party on Sunday, Nov. 8 from 2-4 p.m., will feature writer Bill Bridges presenting a newly published book of illustrated letters between himself and Jenkins. The public is invited to attend.The library has five more programs as well.”The History of Ballet” will be discussed by Myrna Aaron Wormser, a former member of the National Ballet of Canada, from 2-4 p.m. Sundays, Nov. 8 and 15 through the generosity of the Elizabeth J. Houghton Memorial Fund.”Memoir as Story” is a writing workshop led by Pat Sylvia on Wednesdays at 10 a.m., Nov. 4, 18 and 25 and Dec. 2. The class is limited to nine participants. Sign-up is at the main desk.Lee Mansion Curator Judy Anderson will talk about “Saving Lee Mansion – Celebrating 100 Years of Lee Mansion Preservation,” Tuesday, Nov. 10 at 7 p.m.”In Rhythm with the Seasons” is the theme for Ellen Clegg Saturday, Nov. 21 at 10:30 a.m., celebrating community and the harvest with the joy of rhythm from buckets and watering cans to drums, gourd shakers and cowbells.Casey Sherman will discuss his new book “Bad Blood: Freedom and Death in the White Mountains” Thursday, Nov. 5 at 6:30 p.m., hosted by the library and Spirit of ’76 Bookstore.
