The Saugus boys soccer team dropped a 3-1 decision to host Winthrop on Thursday.Saugus played tough but could not capitalize on its scoring chances. The score was 1-0, Winthrop, at the half. Saugus’s Dave Velasquez scored in the second half, assisted by Carmen Bordanaro. Goalie Peter Pulcari had a strong performance as well. Saugus coach Tom Duplisea felt his team played good enough to win.”We had plenty of chances to score, we just couldn’t find the net,” Duplisea said.Salem 2, Beverly 1At Salem, Beverly would strike first midway through the first half for a 1-0 lead. Before the end of the half, Salem’s Dimitri Fleffaf scored, assisted by Brion Likaj, to tie the game 1-1. The score would be 1-1 at the end of the half. Midway through the second half, Nuur Muhammad scored the game-winning goal, assisted by Likaj. Salem (8-7-3) is now guaranteed a spot in the state tournament.Peabody 4, Revere 0At Peabody, Peabody’s Matt Rodgers and Lucas DeOliveira led the way. Rodgers scored the lone goal of the first half, assisted by DeOliveira. Early in the second half, DeOliveria scored, assisted by Colin Mahoney. Rodgers scored his second goal soon after, assisted by DeOliveira. Alec Cerqueira scored the final goal, assisted by Kyle McGlone. Goalie Jason Ryan recorded his eighth shutout this season.Peabody coach Stan McKeen was very impressed with his team’s performance.”This was one of our best efforts of the year. We moved the ball well and all the kids played really well,” McKeen said.Peabody (12-2-2) plays Swampscott Saturday.St. John’s 3, Central Catholic 2At Central Catholic, St. John’s did all the scoring in the game. St. John’s Greg Tremblay and Sean Mackinson scored their first goals of the season. Grant Bean ended up scoring the game-winning goal. St, John’s also scored twice on its own net off deflections. St. John’s (9-7-1) qualified for the state tournament.GIRLS SOCCERSalem 1, AC 1At AC, it was all about dominating defenses. Both teams could not find the net in the first half. Midway through second half, Salem’s Jackie Rocheville scored to put Salem on top 1-0. AC would tie the game with five minutes remaining in the game.Salem goalie Emma Titus had nine saves. Salem (7-6-4) qualified for the state tournament with this tie.Saugus 2, Winthrop 0At Winthrop, Saugus’ Kaleigh Evans would score a first-half unassisted goal to give her team a 1-0 lead, which stayed the score at halftime. Cecilia Devine scored in the second half, assisted by Rose Karhsis. Devine made the score 2-0. Emily Quinlan and Ashley Aldridge played well. Goalie Melissa Toomey had a strong game as well. Saugus coach Chris Coviello was impressed with his team’s performance.”It was a very good game, considering the field was pretty chewed up,” Coviello said.Saugus is now 10-7.Fenwick 3, Austin Prep 0At Fenwick, Fenwick’s Kristin Verrette had two goals and one assist. Ellen O’Leary scored the other goal for Fenwick. Fenwick clinched a spot to participate in the state tournament. Fenwick (6-4-6) plays Marblehead Saturday.
