November 4, 2009 by David Liscio

LYNN – Three incumbents for councilor-at-large kept their seats in Tuesday’s municipal election.Paul Crowley, Timothy Phelan and Daniel Cahill were all re-elected, while Stephen Duffy, a former school committeeman and city councilor, won the fourth at-large seat.Phelan topped the at-large race with 20 percent of the vote, followed closely by Cahill. The losing at-large candidates were Eugene Schneeberg Sr. and George C. Meimeteas who were thousands of votes below the top finishers. In Ward 2, incumbent William Trahant Jr. defeated challenger William Cooksey. Trahant captured 61 percent of the vote in his ward. The race in Ward 4 left incumbent Richard Colucci with 67 percent of the vote while newcomer Gina M. Grandberry managed to attract 32 percent. “It’s not easy to break in,” said Grandberry, noting that women and minorities have struggled to make inroads in Lynn. “But I’m still trying.”In Ward 5, newcomer Brendan Crighton, the legislative aide to state Sen. Thomas McGee, swept the election with 1,117 votes to opponent James M. Stafford’s 384.Ward 1 Councilor Wayne Lozzi, Ward 3 Councilor Darren P. Cyr, Ward 6 Councilor Peter L. Capano and Ward 7 Councilor Richard Ford all ran unopposed. Cyr and Lozzi attended Mayor Edward J. Clancy Jr.’s post-election party at the Hibernian Hall. Both acknowledged that running unopposed left little challenge, but they erected political signs and campaigned nonetheless.Click here for PDF of at-large raceClick here for PDF ofWard 5 raceClick here for PDF of Ward 4 raceClick here for PDF of Ward 2 race/a>
