Roundup: Lynnfield, Fenwick lose in field hockey tournament

The MIAA field hockey Division 2 North quarterfinals claimed two more local teams Friday.Lynnfield lost to Cape Ann League foe Newburyport, 3-2, and Bishop Fenwick fell to Manchester-Essex, 1-0.At Lynnfield, the Clippers and Pioneers are no strangers. The two met in league play earlier in the season and Lynnfield won, 1-0. It was a different story Friday at Lynnfield. The Pioneers drew first blood with a Meriam Gehret goal 10:02 into the first half, but Newburyport rattled off three unanswered goals to take a commanding lead in the second half. Gehret struck again to make it 3-2 with 13:12 remaining, but that was a close as Lynnfield would get. The Pioneers were the No. 3 seed and Newburyport, the No. 11.”We were pressuring them. We had opportunities,” Lynnfield coach Mamie Reardon said about the attempt to come up with the equalizer.This was a veteran team, with all but two players being seniors. Reardon had four girls named to the Cape Ann League All-Star team – Kathleen Twomey, Gehret, Angela Arakelian and Mary Krieger. Twomey, Gehret, and Arakelian also earned All-League status. Lynnfield finishes with a 15-3-2 record.Man.-Essex 1, Fenwick 0At Manchester, Manchester scored off a corner play 10 minutes into the second half when the ball deflected off a defender’s legs. Fenwick goalie Casey Landry played well with five saves.”My goalie and defense played a great game. The whole team stepped up to the challenge of playing the No. 1 seed,” coach Marybeth Mahoney said.Fenwick finished with a 13-6-1 record.VOLLEYBALLLynnfield 3, Mystic Valley 0In Division 3 North first round play, the Pioneers won 25-19, 25-17, 25-13. Senior captain Abby Shove had 11 kills. Junior Kelsey Mancini chipped in with six kills and 24 assists and senior captain Andrea Simonelli had seven aces and 24 assists.”We served well tonight, which I think was the big decision maker in this match,” Lynnfield coach Michelle Perrone said. “We also hit the ball pretty well today. The girls played well.”Lynnfield (10-9) plays Nashoba Valley in the quarterfinals Tuesday (7) at Westford.Peabody 3, Medford 0In Division 1 North first round action, the Tanners won 25-22, 25-18, 25-10. Brianna Waldrop had seven kills and one block and Brittney Figueira had 15 service points. Defensively, Peabody got a lift from Jillian Rizzo and Danielle Pierce.”It was nice to not have the bye,” Peabody coach Lisa Keene said. “It was nice to get the jitters out of the way. We didn’t play very well. There’s a lot of sickness on the team ? It wasn’t as pretty as it should have been.”Peabody will play the winner of Methuen-Chelmsford Tuesday at Peabody (7).Bedford 3, Fenwick 1In Division 2 North play at Peabody, Bedford took the first set, 25-20, lost the second, 17-25, then won the final two, 25-22, 28-26.”This was two very evenly matched teams,” Fenwick coach Adam DeBaggis said. “It came down to who made the most errors.”Dianna Tauro had 11 kills and 10 digs for the Crusaders and senior setter Cathy Bruce had 15 assists.”Both teams played their guts out. It really was kind of a battle,” DeBaggis said.Fenwick finished the season at 11-8.FOOTBALLDanvers 16, Winthrop 3At Miller Field, after a scoreless first quarter, the Falcons went into the half leading 7-3 thanks to a 45-yard touchdown run by Clinton Lutz (Greg Ladd kick). Winthrop got on the board on a 13-yard field goal by Robert Deeb.The Falcons gave themselves a little breathing room thanks to a safety and a John McInnis 26-yard run. Steve Hennessy had two interceptions for Danvers and Dan Skinner had one. Danvers is 5-4.In other Northeastern Conference action, Gloucester defeated Revere, 36-4.
