Roundup: PKs rule the day in tournament soccer

The Swampscott’s girls soccer team won a Division 2 first round tournament game exciting fashion. The eighth ranked Big Blue outlasted Bedford in penalty kicks, winning 3-2.”It was a hard-fought battle,” Swampscott coach Francesco Recchia said. “Whenever it comes down to a shootout, it can go either way.Jen Cleary and Casey Connolly both scored early in the second half to give the Big Blue a 2-0 lead. However, the ninth ranked Buccaneers scored two goals to force the game to overtime.Bridget Genoversa-Wong had a strong game in net, and only rendered two goals in the shoot out. Swampscott on the other hand scored four goals: Cleary, Connolly, Maddy Shaffer and Erin Langdon.The Big Blue will now travel to conference rival and top-ranked Danvers on Tuesday at 6:30 pm.Fenwick 3, North Reading 2 (PK)At North Reading, Jill Dean turned away three-out-of-four penalty kicks. Brittany Dolan, Kristin Verrette and Keri Acheson all scored during the penalty kicks. Verrette netted both of the Crusaders regulation goals.”I’m very happy,” Fenwick coach Karen Guillemette said. “(The Hornets) are a very good team and this was a tough battle. When you get to penalty kicks anything can happen.”The 13th ranked Crusaders will travel to Saugus on Tuesday at 2 pm.Saugus 1, Dracut 0At Dracut, Jessica Capozzi scored the game-winning goal in the final minute of action. Alyssa Wilkie and Gabby Cogliano each picked up an assist on the play. Melissa Toomey recorded the shut out between the pipes. Jackie Strangie and Lauren Donati each had strong performances.Salem 3, Arlington Catholic 2 (overtime)At Arlington, Jasmine Bryant scored a pair of goals, the second one coming in overtime, to propel the 15th ranked Witches past the second seeded team. Lauren Schaejbe scored the other goal. This was Salem’s first postseason win in a decade.The Witches will travel to Wakefield today at 3 p.m.Danvers 4, Gloucester 0At Danvers, Corey Persson scored a hat trick to lead the top seeded Falcons (16-0-3). Joanna Zecha scored the other goal. Kathleen Landers and Tess Saunders each had strong games. Allison Tivnan was only called upon for one save to record the shut out.Danvers will host eighth seeded Swampscott on Tuesday at 6:30 pm.Weston 2, Lynnfield 1At Lynnfield, Lauren McCarthy scored the fourth-seeded Pioneers (13-4-2) lone goal from 25 yards out. Nareh Sahakian made two sensational saves. The two Weston goals came on breakaways.”We weren’t able to execute the game plan as well as we wanted to,” Pioneers coach Mark Vermont said. “It was a tough one.”Wayland 2, Marblehead 1At Wayland, Mary Keroack scored to give the Magicians (7-8-2) a brief lead.”My girls played very well,” Marblehead coach Sam Yawson said. “(Wayland) is a good team and you have to give them credit.In other tournament action, third seeded Peabody shut out Haverhill 5-0 in Division 1 action. The Tanners will host Lincoln-Sudbury on Tuesday at 4 p.m. Fifteenth-seeded Winthrop was eliminated from the Division 3 tournament by the second seed, Shawsheen. The Vikings lost 2-0.BOYS SOCCERSt. John’s 6, Everett 4At Everett, the Eagles scored four goals in the last 11 minutes in the Division 1 preliminary game. Dan O’Connor led the way with a hat trick (all three goals came in 11-minute scoring spree). Grant Bean scored a pair of goals including the game winner. Sean Callahan netted a goal and a pair of assists.St. John’s will now travel to second-seeded Lexington today at 2 pm.Lynnfield 4, Whittier 0At Lynnfield, Andy Millinazzo, Connor Dario, Marco Addonizio and Brendan Colby scored the fifth-seeded Pioneers goals. Jerry Reid recorded the shut out. Lynnfield will travel to fourth seeded Rockport on Tuesday.Cambridge R&L 2, Peabody 0At Peabody, Corey Cronin and Mike Bernazzani each had good performances for the seventh seeded Tanners.Fenwick 5, Trinity Catholic 0At Peabody, the Crusaders spread the scoring around well as five different players scored: Angelo Maida, Teegan Innis, Artie Newman, Bryon Blaisdell
