LYNN – He stood with the rest of his teammates before the game and saw his uncle, Ray McDermott, honored for his contributions toward making this Wednesday evening pre-Thanksgiving Day game happen. Then, Matt McDermott went out and did the family name proud.McDermott picked off two of Lynn Tech’s Dustin Rooney’s passes Wednesday night – taking one of them into the end zone for a touchdown – as he helped St. Mary’s finish their season on a high note with a 36-20 win over the Tigers at Manning Field. The Spartans finish their season at 7-4, as do the Tigers.McDermott is one of eight seniors that coach Matt Durgin credits with helping steady an otherwise young team.”A lot of people were pumped up for this game,” said Durgin, “but you know how it is. It isn’t always the most well-known players who come through in these things.”I’d say Matt really stepped it up tonight. He really, really reached back. And what a night for him ? and for the family ? to see his uncle honored and then to go out and play like that.”For his efforts, McDermott was named the game’s defensive star. Todd Collier, who scored two touchdowns, was the offensive star.On the other side of the ball, Tech’s Pedro Martinez was his team’s offensive star while Ryan Murphy – who could have won either way – was the defensive hero.”I’ve scored a couple of touchdowns,” said McDermott, “but never in a game like this. This was an awesome feeling.”First, my uncle gets honored and then this happens.”Durgin said Wednesday’s win was a great one for the program.”It’s memories of a lifetime for these seniors, and I couldn’t be happier for them,” he said. “Twenty years from now, this win’s going to be even bigger to them.”Two weeks ago, the Spartans were handled easily by Cardinal Spellman down in Brockton. But Durgin said as soon as that game ended, the team began focusing on Tech.”We watched a lot of film of Ryan Murphy,” Durgin said. “What a football player. He’s big ? and we knew we nobody was going to handle him one on one. We knew we had to play team defense on him.”Murphy scored two touchdowns, was pretty much held in check for most of the game – on offense. On defense he was a going concern.”He’s tremendous,” said coach Gary Sverker. “And he was tremendous tonight.”
