Lynn board OKs easement purchase for pub owners

December 2, 2009 by dliscio

LYNN – More than a half-century ago, the Four Winds Pub at 265 Broadway was partially built on city land. The situation remained unknown until recently when the owner died and family members attempted to convey the deed. The City Council’s Public Property Committee resolved the issue Tuesday by voting to allow the business owners to purchase an easement on the land for $4,000.Ward 2 Councilor William Trahant Jr. made a motion to allow the easement with the stipulation that the property owner must pay the $4,000 before the easement is recorded with the deed at the Southern Essex Registry of Deeds.Ward 1 Councilor Wayne Lozzi said the property owners will begin paying taxes on the land covered by the easement in addition to the $4,000. “That’s all money coming in that the city can use,” he said. The Four Winds Pub, tucked hard by the shore of Sluice Pond, has been a Lynn landmark and neighborhood watering hole for years. It was in the news last month when divers found the body of a missing Peabody grandmother in nearby Flax Pond.Investigators had previously learned that Alice Nunes had been drinking alone at the Four Winds Pub on the night of Dec. 15, 2008. The woman apparently became lost after leaving the pub and drove her car into the dark pond.
