LYNN – A 59-year-old homeless man living in Revere remains in serious condition at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston after he jumped from a moving train Thursday night in Central Square.
Stephen White was a passenger aboard a northbound Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority commuter train when it stopped at Central Square Station shortly before 9 p.m. According to the MBTA, as the train began moving again toward the next stop in Swampscott, White leaped from the coach, lost his footing and fell between the platform and the train.
Passengers told MBTA investigators the conductor was in the vestibule of the connected coach and in the process of closing the door when White pushed past him. The conductor warned White that it was too late to leave the train.
The MBTA incident report noted that “throughout the trip from Boston to Lynn, witnesses stated that Mr. White was disoriented and moving about the first coach of the train.”
The Rockport-bound train left Boston’s North Station at 8:30 p.m. and arrived in Lynn at 8:49 p.m. “After White exited the coach, he lost his footing and fell between the platform and the moving commuter rail train,” the report stated. “As a result of the fall, White received injuries to his left arm and was subsequently transported by Lynn Fire Rescue to Mass General where he was treated and admitted for emergency surgical procedures. Shortly after White fell between the commuter rail platform and train he was given emergency first aid by passengers who applied a tourniquet to White’s left arm to stop the bleeding.”
White was still in the hospital recovery ward Friday afternoon.
Train service was restored at 11:20 p.m.
