SALEM – A 19-year-old Marblehead man suspected of stabbing a man with a pair of steak knives in a bizarre attack in Hammond Park this past summer has been indicted by an Essex County grand jury.Ryan Muldoon, 19, of 2 Walnut St., Marblehead, faces two counts of armed assault with intent to murder and two counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon in connection with the Aug. 4 unprovoked attack of a 28-year-old man.According to reports, the victim had gone to the park at around 9 p.m. to meet a friend. He said a man came up behind him and stabbed him, leaving one of the steak knives still lodged in his back. The victim, who thought he had been struck by a rock, began chasing after Muldoon, when his friend spotted him and yelled out that he had a knife sticking out of his back. The victim stopped running and pulled the knife out as his assailant continued to take off onto Gregory Street. When police arrived, they found two bloody knives, one near the scene and the other near the victim. The victim suffered two stab wounds to his back and was taken to Salem Hospital where he spent the next five days.Police canvassed the area and initially charged Anthony Merrill, 22, of Lynn, with the crime. However, following a further investigation, the charges were dropped against Merrill and Muldoon was arrested following a tip from area residents. When police searched Muldoon’s home where he lives with his grandparents, they reportedly discovered four steak knives that matched the two assault knives in the home.Muldoon is currently on house arrest following his arraignment in Lynn District Court. The indictments handed up now move the case to Superior Court where Muldoon will be re-arraigned within a few weeks.Assistant District Attorney Michael P. Hickey is prosecuting the case for the commonwealth.
