One day after a fracas broke out after a Lynn English-Winthrop High boys basketball game at Cavanagh Field House in Lynn on Wednesday, members of both the Bulldogs and Vikings staffs did not have much to say on whether any disciplinary actions were pending. Both English head coach Buzzy Barton and athletic director Gary Molea referred calls to principal Andy Fila. Fila did not return several phone calls on Wednesday night.Winthrop head coach David Brown said that school athletic director Rob O’Leary and principal Gail Conlon are undertaking a preliminary investigation into the altercation, which began during the postgame handshake that followed a 68-51 English victory.”If there’s something that needs to be handled on our end, we’ll handle it,” O’Leary said, “and I hope that English will do the same, from the top to the bottom.”The outbursts seemed more vocal than physical; news accounts reported that no one appeared to throw a punch. The situation could change today, if Conlon, who was not at Winthrop High on Wednesday, reviews a copy of the game film the school has received from English. The Vikings have their own copy, but it was stopped 30 seconds before the end of the game.”I think all of us working together can put this behind us,” O’Leary said. “At some point, everyone has to sit down and air this out.”He added, “It was a great basketball game, probably one of the best basketball games I’ve seen involving Winthrop in a long time.”
