Basketball: Somerville sinks English girls hoop

The Somerville girls basketball squad held off a persistent English team 47-46 at Somerville on Thursday.The score was 45-44, Somerville, with 12 seconds left when Jenicia Duggins was fouled. Duggins hit both free throws to give the Bulldogs a 46-45 lead. The Bulldogs committed a foul with three seconds left and Somerville hit the game-winning free throws. English coach Fred Hogan was satisfied with his team’s performance.”It was a battle all game. Somerville is a good team and they showed it today,” Hogan said.Duggins finished up with 15 points. Lashaunda Hogan had a strong performance with a team high of 22 points. English is 12-2.Peabody 55, Gloucester 41At Peabody, Peabody jumped out to a big lead early and never looked back. Peabody had an 18-6 lead after the first quarter, and was up 29-21 at halftime. The score was tied 29-29 early in the third quarter, but that was the closest that Gloucester got. Leading the way for Peabody was Ginny Fleming, scoring a game-high 17 points and adding seven rebounds. Hayley Dowd chipped in with 12 points and six assists. Janelle Rodriguez had a near double-double with nine points and 12 rebounds. For Gloucester, Olivia Lufkin had a strong performance with a team high of 16 points. Heather Cain chipped in with 15 points. Peabody is 12-1.BOYS BASKETBALLPeabody 92, Gloucester 83 (OT)At Gloucester, Peabody’s Kyle Boyce and Brian DeAngelis led the way in this overtime thriller. Peabody was in control for most the game, but Gloucester kept chipping away at the lead until it was tied at the end of regulation. Peabody dominated the overtime period, outscoring Gloucester 15-6. Peabody coach Domenic Coleman was very happy with his team’s performance.”It was a battle all game. I was really impressed and happy with how well my team executed in overtime,” said Coleman.Boyce finished with 25 points, eight assists, and four steals. DeAngelis chipped in with 22 points, five assists, and five rebounds. John Byrne and Alex Marc-Aurele had strong games on the defensive end. For Gloucester, Adam Philpott scored a game-high 41 points. Peabody is 6-10.
