Hunters, anglers, shooting sports enthusiasts, and all outdoorsmen will find everything they need and have the opportunity to earn an “advanced degree” in outdoor knowledge during the 34th annual Eastern Fishing & Outdoor Exposition Feb. 11-14 at Worcester’s DCU Center. Presented by the World Fishing Network (WFN), the Expo features more than 350 exhibitors from across the Northeast and the nation to showcase everything from tackle to hunting gear to boats as well as the latest in products and services for sportsmen and women and their families. “The Eastern Fishing & Outdoor Exposition offers many things to do under one roof,” says Jonathan Sauers, show director. “Whether you have enjoyed the outdoors your whole life or you are just getting started, you will find row after row of exciting exhibits and activities.” Hunting seminars should be of great interest to all levels of hunters. World-famous archer Chuck Adams will offer seminars on Saturday and Sunday. New this year is an appearance by The Outdoor Channel’s Deer City USA Team. The team consists of top deer hunters Steve Gruber, Mark Millis and Tim Andrus, who will showcase their new and innovative suburban deer hunting techniques. Perennial favorite Peter Fiduccia is also back this year. Bass fishing, a favorite among many expo-goers, is well-represented. Mark Zona of ESPN’s Greatest Fishing Show, and Tim Horton, one of the top all-time money winners on the professional bass circuit, will share their secrets of success. Other great features include Talons, A Bird of Prey Experience sure to delight the entire family; the Archery Range, Trout Pond and the Mass. Rifle Team Air Rifle range and a giant rock-climbing wall from Vertical Dreams.Show hours are Thursday and Friday, 12:30 to 9 p.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.; and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $11 for adults and $3 for children under the age of 12. Children under five are admitted free. Worcester’s DCU Center is located in downtown Worcester. From I-290, take Exit 16 to the DCU Center. Attendance at all expo seminars is free with the prices of admission.Ice fishing has been very good locally although this week’s warm temperatures, substantial rainfall and heavy winds weakened ice throughout the state. Heavy rains can open the water, thin existing ice or create slush. Never guess the thickness of the ice ? check it! Again this year on Sunday, Feb. 7, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., Ippi’s and Lynn Fish and Game will hold a Super Bowl Ice Derby on Sluice Pond. This derby will also be a memorial for Jean and Jack Seelley. Entry fee is $10 and the scale will be at the boat ramp. Cash prizes for all fish categories except salmon. Seelley Memorial provides $50 Ippi’s gift certificate for largest salmon caught. If you haven’t already heard, the Winni Derby has been cancelled this year due to the poor numbers of salmon that were netted in the fall for breeding. Derby officials consulted with NH biologists and decided to call it off this year. Please note, we are talking about the spring derby not the Greater Rotary Ice Derby that is still scheduled to take place this weekend! All for now.
