Hockey: St Mary’s girls beat Hingham to win 65th straight

Another hurdle cleared.Courtney Winters scored teh hat trick Saturday as the St. Mary’s girls hockey team raised its record to 14-0 (and won its 65th straight game over three years) with a 3-1 win at Hingham’s Pilgrim Arena.Erin McAndrews, Michelle Macchione and Katherine Chittick each added an assist. Sarah Foss turned away 17 shots.The Spartans swept the season’s series from the tough Harborwome, but both games were close.”It was a very intense game on both sides,” St. Mary’s coach Frank Pagliuca said. “Each team took some penalties. We were fortunate to capitalize on ours.”Macchione and Angela Dandreo had very strong defensive performances.Beverly 1, Reading 1At Burbank Rink, Allyson Spencer netted a goal in the second period to tie the game for the Panthers (9-1-3). Brianna Jackson turned away 27 shots.”It was an evenly matched game,” Beverly coach Fiona Rice said. “We struggled a bit in the first but we settled down and got two solid periods.”In other NEC action, Marblehead defeated Masco 5-2 and Lynn defeated Peabody 11-1.Marblehead 5, Masco 2At Salem State Saturday, Lexi Lang scored twice, Rachel McCay, Ally Healey and Keelin Fallon had one apiece.Katie Zerinsky had two assistsMarblehead is 7-4-4.BOYS HOCKEYHingham 3, St. Mary’s 2In what was its best outing of the season, The Spartans just came up short against one of the State’s powerhouses.”It was a tremendous game,” St. Mary’s coach Mark Lee said. “We just missed on several occasions. We played our best game against the best team we’ve played to this point.”St. Mary’s was down 3-0 going into the third period. Brendan Mageary scored early on to put the Spartans on the board. A few minutes later Mike Restuccia scored to bring them within one goal,.”You’re never happy with a loss,” said Lee, “but we are just about as happy as you can be with the effort that we gave out there.”Nikko Markham, Julian Yourawski and Corey Bartlett each picked up an assist. Donald Hesse turned away 17 shots.Steve Bellew led Hingham’s attack with a goal and two assists.St. Mary’s is only four points out of the tournament with five games remaining in the season.Fenwick 7, St. Clement’s 2At Rockett Arena, Mike Cipriani had a standout performance for the Crusaders (9-6) scoring four goals and an assist. Brett Kidik scored a goal and added three assists. Blaine Thibodeau turned away 21 shots in the win. Fenwick is in very good position to win the Catholic Central League, sitting a 6-0 in league play. The Crusaders are also only two points out of the tournament with five games remaining.St. John’s 6, Matignon 0At Stoneham Arena, Colin Blackwell netted a pair of goals to lead the Eagles (6-6-1) offense. St. John’s also got goals from Greg Tremblay, Joe Currie, Devin Murray and Kyle Linehan. It was Linehan’s first goal of the season and Currie’s first career varsity goal. David Latarte, Andrew Venziano and John Simone combined to make 19 saves in the shut out. It was Veneziano and Simone’s, both seniors, first varsity action.Beverly 6, Gloucester 3At Rocket Arena, Tyler Albano and Brian Spencer each netted a pair of goals and an assist for the Panthers (8-6-1, 4-6-1 NEC). Jack Liacos scored a goal and two assists Troy Cabral scored a goal and an assist. MacKenzie Quinn, Sal Taormina and John Interrante scored the Fishermen’s (6-4-4, 4-3-4 NEC) goals.Danvers 6, Revere 2At Rockett Arena, Chris Kontos scored a pair of goals and added an assist for the Falcons (8-3-1, 6-2-1 NEC). Kyle Larson scored a goal and added three assists. DJ Yost picked up three assists. Jay Sasso and Joe Corbett scored the Patriots (4-8-2, 2-7-2 NEC) goals.Marblehead 11, Salem 1At Rockett Arena, Chris McLeod scored a hat trick and added a pair of assists for the Magicians (11-2-2, 7-2-2 NEC). Ryan Dempsey scored a goal and four assists. Alex Whitmore scored a goal and two assists. Jake Kulevich scored a goal and an assist. Jesse Wilkins scored the lone Salem goal.sWilmington 3, Lynnfield 0At Ristuccia Rink, the Pioneers (6-6-2)
