Nick Gagliolo scored 23 points to lead the St. Mary’s boys basketball team to a 70-64 win over Archbishop Williams and a trip to the state tournament. The Spartans (10-7) have now qualified for the postseason for the third year in a row and they did it with three games to spare.Coach Kevin Moran knew this one wouldn’t be easy given the fact his team only escaped Braintree with a two-point win (42-40) earlier in the season. Williams has also qualified for the tournament.”This was probably our best all-around game,” Moran said. “We spread around the scoring.”Gagliolo, in addition to his 23 points, had four steals, six assists and eight rebounds. Ronsanto Campbell had 15 points and nine rebounds; Devin Thompson, 11 points, and Matt Manning, 10 points.Marblehead 51, Pentucket 46At Marblehead, Matt Temme was pretty much unstoppable for the Magicians, scoring 25 points. Tommy Stockwell had six points and seven rebounds. Marblehead is 9-8.GIRLS BASKETBALLWilliams 50, St. Mary’s 37At Braintree, the Spartans (13-5) needed this one to secure a tie for first place in the Catholic Central League Large with one league game remaining, but it wasn’t to be. Archbishop Williams has now won the CCL Large three of the last four years (Arlington Catholic won it last year).”We didn’t play very well at all,” St. Mary’s coach Jeff Newhall said. “Williams shot well from the outside and that opened up their inside game.”St. Mary’s trailed 37-15 at the break, but played a better game in the second half, giving up only four field goals. Tori Faieta led St. Mary’s with 16 points. Bria Tiro was next up with 10.Manchester-Essex 62, Lynnfield 49At Lynnfield, Jamie Harris had 16 points and Sarah Goldstein contributed 11, along with 10 rebounds, two blocks and a steal. It wasn’t enough, however, to offset Manchester-Essex sniper Lizzie Ball. Ball scored 30 points against the Pioneers earlier this season and 29 points in round two.Click here for a photo gallery.Lynnfield is 6-12.
